Mission:
- To provide a non-hierarchical artistic home for theatre collaborators and supporters of New Work.
- To present work that challenges the ways in which we experience everyday life, by challenging the ways in which we experience everyday theatre.
- To foster diversity by embracing the inherent differences as well as the similarities among individuals and groups and exploring the realm in which they intersect.
- To cultivate a self-defined audience base that cannot be narrowed down to a series of percentages on a demographic stat sheet.
Process:
CultureMesh believes in the vital relationship between Playwright and Actors. In creating new work we have cultivated this relationship by doing a show and tell type exercises. For example the playwright/compose may write a piece of music accompanied by a thematic idea which he/she gives to the actor(s). The Actor(s) then create a movement based segment on the music and concept and take it back to the playwright, who then uses this bit as inspiration for a monologue or scene. In this way the script, characters, music and blocking are all integrated and created simultaneously.
We feel this process is unique in that most modern theatre begins with a script, then ads the actors, then ad the music/set/costumes. Whereas in the CultureMesh process the actors might be inspired by a prop or costume and create a character who then inspires the script. We have found that this collaborative way of working yields a much richer, modern and unique way of looking at theatre as both art and entertainment.
